The Complete Guide
The 1,000-year-old algorithm that mapped human patterns before data science existed.
The Quick Answer
Saju (사주) — also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, or BaZi(八字) in Chinese — is a Korean system of self-understanding calculated from your exact birth date and time. The word means “four pillars”: the year, month, day, and hour you were born. Each pillar contributes two characters, giving eight in total — which is why the full name is saju-palja(사주팔자), “four pillars, eight characters.”
The closest modern comparison is a personality framework like MBTI. But instead of answering a questionnaire, your chart is calculated from astronomy — and instead of 16 boxes, there are 518,400 possible combinations. Korean astrology has used this method for over a thousand years to understand temperament, strengths, relationships, and timing.

The Mechanics
Your birth creates 4 data points, each containing 2 variables:

10 types
The visible energy — how the world sees you.
12 types
The 12 zodiac animals. The roots that ground you.

Every element has two modes — active & receptive.
60 options per pillar
× 4 pillars
= 518,400 possible charts
Compare that to 12 zodiac signs.
The Core (일간)
Of your 8 characters, just one is you — the stem of your Day pillar. The other 7 describe the world around that core: your season, your era, your timing.
If your chart is an operating system, your Day Master is the CPU. Everything else is RAM, peripherals, and update cycles.
There are exactly 10 Day Masters — 5 elements × Yin/Yang. Each one is a MySaju type:

Step by Step
Learning how to read a Saju chart sounds intimidating, but the logic is straightforward once you know what each part does. Here is the same four-step process a Korean Saju reader follows — simplified into plain language.
1. Find your Day Master. Of your eight characters, the one that represents you is the heavenly stem of your day pillar — your Day Master (일간). It is one of ten: the five elements, each in a Yin or Yang mode. This single character is your core temperament, the lens everything else is read through.
2. Read your element balance. Add up how much Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water appear across all four pillars. A chart heavy in Fire behaves very differently from one heavy in Water — the dominant elements show where your energy naturally flows, and the missing ones show what you have to work to access.
3. Map the cycles. The five elements interact through two relationships — the creation cycle (상생) and the control cycle (상극). These show where the parts of your chart support each other and where they create tension, which is the foundation of both personality reading and compatibility between two charts.
4. Apply the timing.Your chart is a fixed map, but the energy around it changes year by year. Reading those luck cycles is how Saju is used for decisions — when to push, when to rest, when to make a move. You can see today's version of this on your daily Saju energy page.
You don't need to do any of this by hand. Generate your free Saju chart and we calculate the four pillars, your Day Master, and your full element balance instantly — or look up your Korean zodiac animal to start with the part most people already know.

Comparison
Not better — different lenses. Love your birth chart? Saju adds another layer: instead of asking what the planets predict, it asks how you're wired to operate.
Western Astrology asks:
"What does Mercury retrograde mean for me?"
"When will I find love?"
"What's my rising sign?"
Saju asks:
"What's my natural operating mode?"
"When is my high-energy window?"
"How do I optimize my current state?"
Think of them as two maps of the same territory — read together, you see more.
The Question Everyone Asks
Korea is famous for being obsessed with both Saju and MBTI, so it's natural to ask how they relate. The short version: MBTI describes how you think; Saju describes how you're wired and when your energy shifts. They answer different questions, which is exactly why so many people use both.
MBTI comes from a self-report questionnaire, so your result can change with your mood or how you answer on a given day. A Saju chart is calculated once from your birth date and time and never changes — it's closer to a fixed blueprint than a quiz result. MBTI also sorts everyone into 16 types; Saju starts from 10 Day Master types but expands into 518,400 possible charts, so two people who “share a type” can still read very differently.
The biggest difference is timing. MBTI has no concept of when— it's the same description every year. Saju is built around cycles: it tells you not just what you're like, but which periods favour bold moves and which favour rest. If MBTI is a snapshot of your personality, Saju is the personality plus the calendar.

FAQ
Is this fortune telling?
No. Saju is pattern recognition, not prophecy. We don't predict lottery numbers. We analyze your energy operating system and optimal timing.
Do I need to "believe" in it?
No. Think of it like MBTI — you don't "believe" in being an INTJ, you recognize patterns. Use what resonates, ignore what doesn't.
How accurate is it?
Saju has been refined over 1,000 years across millions of charts. Accuracy depends on birth data quality (exact hour helps) and how you apply insights.
What if I don't know my birth hour?
Still works! Your Year, Month, and Day give 75% of the picture. Hour adds precision, but isn't required.
Is this Korean astrology?
Sort of. It originated in China, evolved in Korea, and uses astronomy + philosophy + observation. "Korean life algorithm" is more accurate.
Can it predict the future?
No. It maps energy patterns and timing windows. Like knowing it's winter — you know to wear a coat, but you don't know if it'll snow on Tuesday.
Why should I trust this?
1,000+ years of refinement across millions of charts. Still consulted by the majority of Koreans today, and built into a system with 518,400 possible combinations. You don't have to "trust" it — just try it and see if it resonates.
What is a Day Master?
Your Day Master (일간) is the single character that represents you — the heavenly stem of your day pillar. It's one of 10 (five elements × Yin/Yang) and is your core temperament, the lens your whole chart is read through.
Is Saju the same as Chinese BaZi?
They share the same Four Pillars foundation. BaZi (八字) is the Chinese name; Saju (사주) is the Korean tradition that evolved from it, with its own interpretive style. MySaju uses the Korean approach in plain modern English.
The Key Insight
Your type is 1 of 10. But your reading? One of 518,400 possible charts.
Here's why: your Day Master is just the core. The other 7 characters — your season, your hour, your exact element balance — make every reading unique.
Two Pioneers can get completely different career, love, and timing readings. Same type — different operating conditions.
10

The Bottom Line
Saju isn't magic.
It's 1,000 years of pattern recognition.
It won't predict your future.
But it might help you optimize your present.
